TÜSİAD’s 42nd General Assembly met on January 19th, 2012, in Istanbul. The assembly opened with statements by the Chairman of TÜSİAD High Advisory Council Erkut Yücaoğlu and the President of the Board of Directors Ümit Boyner. Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan addressed to the assembly as the guest of honor.
In her opening statement, Ümit Boyner affirmed that Turkey has to persist in its endeavor to deepen its democracy and to develop its legal and judicial system to the highest standards, as if the objective of the EU membership is close and alive. Boyner said that the verdict of the court in the case of the murder of the journalist Hrant Dink shocked and hurt the conscience of the public, as after so much time and in spite of the evidences and established connections, the real culprits behind the murder are still untouchable. Boyner stressed that the most concrete consequence of the whole court process is the wearing down of our trust in the judicial system and the failure of our legal framework became manifest.
Erkut Yücaoğlu’s statement focused on the problem of the current deficit. Yücaoğlu expressed that the current deficit problem was contained by the slowing down of the economy, and not by an increase of the incomes. Yücaoğlu emphasized that Turkish Industry has to prevail over this structural problem, otherwise a sustainable growth rate of 7% will be very hard to attain.
Following the opening statements, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan presented an overview of the current state of the global economy and the Turkish economy.
