The report “World Energy Outlook 2012” prepared by the International Energy Agency (IEA) is launched in Turkey with a meeting jointly hosted by TÜSİAD and the International Energy Agency at the Istanbul Marti Hotel on December 21st, 2012.
Opening speeches of the meeting launching the report containing analysis of the year 2012 were made by Mr. Hasan Murat Mercan, Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Ms. Ümit Boyner, President of the Board of Directors of TÜSİAD
In her speech, Ms. Boyner gave the highlights of the IEA projections, stating that prominent issues of the coming period will be, revitalization of the oil and natural gas production in the USA and in some other countries, ensuing change of the production and consumption structures, decision of some countries on abandoning nuclear energy, rising and excessively fluctuating energy prices, and as a result of all these, a drift toward energy efficiency. Ms. Boyner stated that with regard to the energy supply, new technologies of oil and gas production, particularly developments in the USA on the extraction of the shale gas have a direct impact on the global energy supply, and cause European production of electricity to shift towards coal, which is cheaper but also a resource worsening greenhouse gas emission. Ms. Boyner remarked that while Turkey ranks 21st in primary energy consumption, among the OECD countries, it is also the country with the greatest increase in energy demand during the last decade. She emphasized that, to ensure the energy supply security, by means of a balanced diversification and competitive prices is a prerequisite for a sustainable development and a major responsibility toward the future generations. Ms. Ümit Boyner, President of the Board of Directors of TÜSİAD, concluded by saying “Hence, in order to improve the competitive power of the manufacturing industry and other sectors, providing quality energy at a reasonable price and using it efficiently is a must.”
At the meeting, Dr. Fatih Birol, Chief Economist of the International Energy Agency presented the “World Energy Outlook 2012” Report.
The meeting included also a panel discussion titled “Energy Sector in Turkey in the Light of the Changing Global and Regional Dynamics” The panel was moderated by Mr. Nusret Cömert, Vice President of the Energy Working Group of TÜSİAD.
