Technology Standards and Standard Essential Patents (SEP)

The TÜSİAD Technology Standards and Standard Essential Patents (SEP) Task Force aims to create awareness on technology standards and standard essential patents, facilitate the monitoring of developments in this context, ease the execution of relevant advocacy activities, prepare a roadmap for determining the cost impact of standards, and aims to create a roadmap for our country to have a share in technology standards.

According to OECD research, 80% of global trade is affected by technology standards. Having a say in technology standards provides countries and companies with the opportunity to create trade barriers in their favor, gain cost advantages in competition, and effectively return investments made in R&D. Countries and international companies aware of this actively use technology standards as a part of their strategies. In order to maximize returns from R&D investments, there is intensive participation in standard development organizations where technology standards are created.

Among our country's 2023 Industry and Technology Goals are objectives such as increasing the export of high-tech products, increasing R&D investments to 1.8% of gross domestic product, and producing at least 23 smart products with a world leader market share or brand value. TÜSİAD believes that in a world where having a share in technology standards is one of the most effective tools to have a say in technology and to recover R&D investments, we need to increase our effectiveness in this area to sustainably achieve these goals.

Within the framework of these objectives, the Task Force continues its activities under the coordination of the TÜSİAD Investment Environment Roundtable and within the scope of the Intellectual Property Rights and R&D Working Group. It will conduct studies to create awareness on technology standards and SEPs in the public, private sector, NGOs, and universities, enable appropriate technologies and industrial property rights to be included in relevant standards in Türkiye, and shed light on unforeseen costs resulting from SEPs.
